A new program offered by the University of Texas McDonald Observatory has certified Fossil Knob Ridge as in full compliance with the most stringent dark-sky friendly lighting codes. Light pollution threatens our precious Class I dark skies. A new initiative from the McDonald Observatory is helping local communities and businesses improve their outdoor lighting to help protect dark skies. For more about the initiative, dark skies, light pollution, and the McDonald Observatory, please follow the link.
This program is supported by donations and visitors to the McDonald Observatory. Please support them however you can and help us protect our dark skies for ourselves and future generations!
Sign up to hear from us in our monthly newsletter! We will talk about local Terlingua events, the history of Fossil Knob Ridge, and so much more! We won't spam you :)
Fossil Knob Ridge is located on a hillside 1.75 miles from the Terlingua Ghost Town. No neighbors share the last 3/4 mile of unpaved road into the property, so we enjoy seclusion yet are still close to town. Fossil Knob Ridge overlooks Terlingua in the foreground, and enjoys a breathtaking view of the Chisos and Big Bend National Park.
Your hardest decision of the day should be whether to have your coffee on the porch or from your bed, shouldn't it? Out here, the view is bigger than any window you can put in front of it! We designed our windows and our porches to give you enough room to enjoy that view. Did you know, at Fossil Knob Ridge, the sun sets in the east? Come see it to believe it...
Our outdoor lighting provides a safe, romantic atmosphere that's just perfect for enjoying the famous Class I Dark Skies that Big Bend has to offer. Astronomy buffs can bring their telescopes, and amateur enthusiasts should at least bring binoculars. Enjoy s'mores by the fire pits and wonder at the universe.
We are "on the grid," yet still practice ecologically-friendly conservation. That way, you don't have to worry about whether there's enough power or water for the perfect vacation. Check out the pages for the individual units to see their specific amenities.
We know the appeal of leaving those devices behind. But, we realize that you might need to check your email or enjoy a movie night with your loved ones. We also cater to those who need to "flexcation," using part of their day to work remotely (VERY remotely) and the rest to relax and explore. We provide blazing-fast WiFi, but it's up to you whether to let the rest of the world in!
Our rentals are "socially distanced" from each other. They are separated by the hillside and offer private porches and views. Separate parties can enjoy privacy and seclusion from each other, while larger groups could rent multiple houses and enjoy being in close walking distance to each other. We do provide a discount for those renting multiple units. We carefully planned to accommodate everything from an intimate couple's retreat to a family reunion.
Book your vacation at the ultimate modern vacation rentals in the rugged outback of the Big Bend region, located just outside the Terlingua Ghost Town. In a land of endless mountain and desert vistas that is famed for ghost town ruins, rustic adobes, and Old West ranch homes, the Fossil Knob Ridge vacation rentals offer a unique contrast. The ultra-modern vacation rentals at Fossil Knob Ridge are contemporary homes built from recycled shipping containers. Yes, you read that right. These vacation rental homes are constructed from big metal boxes that were originally used for transporting cargo across the globe on trains and ocean freighters. The owner purchased them from a shipping company and converted them into contemporary and stylish living spaces. Don’t worry though, they are far more than just metal boxes with some furniture. Indeed, these homes offer the most neoteric lodging in the Terlingua area.
Relax inside or on the shaded patio. The units are close enough together to accommodate larger groups, however they are distanced so that everyone can enjoy privacy. Explore the fossil-strewn 20 acre property. Drive or walk into the Ghost Town to explore the historic ruins, dine, drink, enjoy live music, or hang out with local and travelers from around the globe. If you play an instrument or sing, join in on an impromptu jam, session on the porch of the old trading post. Drive into Big Bend Nation Park or Big Bend Ranch State park for endless outdoor adventures. Book a river trip, jeep tour, horseback ride, mountain bike rental, guided hike, or guided hunt. Enjoy a controlled campfire. Marvel at the night skies. Watch the stunning sunrises and sunsets. Do as much or as little as you like. Then, come back again and do even more or less.
