Fossil Knob Ridge is located on a hillside 1.75 miles from the Terlingua Ghost Town. No neighbors share the last 3/4 mile of unpaved road into the property, so you enjoy seclusion yet are still close to town. Fossil Knob Ridge overlooks Terlingua in the foreground, and enjoys a breathtaking view of the Chisos and Big Bend National Park.
Your hardest decision of the day should be whether to have your coffee on the porch or from your bed, shouldn't it? Out here, the view is bigger than any window you can put in front of it! We designed our windows and our porches to give you enough room to enjoy that view. Did you know, at Fossil Knob Ridge, the sun sets in the east? Come see it to believe it...
Our outdoor lighting provides a safe, romantic atmosphere that's just perfect for enjoying the famous Class I Dark Skies that Big Bend has to offer. Enjoy s'mores by the fire pits and wonder at the universe.
We are "on the grid," yet still practice ecologically-friendly conservation. That way, you don't have to worry about whether there's enough power or water for the perfect vacation. Check out the pages for the individual units to see their specific amenities.
We know the appeal of leaving those devices behind. But, we realize that you might need to check your email or enjoy a movie night with your loved ones. We provide blazing-fast WiFi, but it's up to you whether to let the rest of the world in!
The two rentals are about 150 feet from each other, are separated by the hillside, and face opposite directions. Separate parties can enjoy total privacy and seclusion from each other, while larger groups could rent both and enjoy being close to each other. We carefully planned to accommodate everything from an intimate couple's retreat to a family reunion.
Book your vacation at the ultimate modern vacation rentals in the rugged outback of the Big Bend region, located just outside the Terlingua Ghost Town. In a land of endless mountain and desert vistas that is famed for ghost town ruins, rustic adobes, and Old West ranch homes, the Fossil Knob Ridge vacation rentals offer a unique contrast. The ultra-modern vacation rentals at Fossil Knob Ridge are contemporary homes built from recycled shipping containers. Yes, you read that right. These vacation rental homes are constructed from big metal boxes that were originally used for transporting cargo across the globe on trains and ocean freighters. The owner purchased them from a shipping company and converted them into contemporary and stylish living spaces. Don’t worry though, they are far more than just metal boxes with some furniture. Indeed, these homes offer the most neoteric lodging in the Terlingua area.
Relax inside or on the shaded patio. The units are close enough together to accommodate larger groups, however they are on opposite sides of a bluff and face opposite directions, so everyone can enjoy total privacy. Explore the fossil-strewn 20 acre property. Drive or walk into the Ghost Town to explore the historic ruins, dine, drink, enjoy live music, or hang out with local and travelers from around the globe. If you play an instrument or sing, join in on an impromptu jam, session on the porch of the old trading post. Drive into Big Bend Nation Park or Big Bend Ranch State park for endless outdoor adventures. Book a river trip, jeep tour, horseback ride, mountain bike rental, guided hike, or guided hunt. Enjoy a controlled campfire. Marvel at the night skies. Watch the stunning sunrises and sunsets. Do as much or as little as you like. Then, come back again and do even more or less.
"Amazing views of the sunset on the Chicos Mountains in Big Bend-every shade of red imaginable, with a glass of wine in hand, on a beautiful, cozy patio. The unit was located outside of town a bit, so close enough for easy access to restaurants and the store, but far enough away to give a sense of solitude-much better than many of the rentals which seemed to be clustered together right in town.
The children loved exploring the desert area surrounding the unit and seeing all sorts of interesting wildlife. The unit itself was really interesting and well done, made from cargo containers, but very cozy and colorful on the inside with lots of room for cooking, a beautiful stone walled shower after a warm desert day and a big cozy bed for vacation sleeping in! A really cool touch is a small niche window in the bedroom that allows the early glow of sunrise to peek in and casts the room in beautiful golden tones.
In the evening, we enjoyed sitting under the stars while cooking on the grill and making smores around the fire pit. The moon rises right over the mountains, so we had a perfect view of all the stars, moon and sky one could ask for!" -George H. VRBO.com
"This space was fantastic! We reserved both spaces on this lot for our large group. This larger unit was extremely comfortable and well-appointed. It was tastefully appointed. Everyone slept perfectly. These spaces are largely out of view of Terlingua, unlike many of the properties in the town which were on surprisingly small lots. For a trip to Big Bend or the Rio Grande, these spaces can't be beat! We would absolutely rent either of the spaces again." -Brendan G. VRBO.com
"Fossil Knob Ridge was absolutely incredible! It felt like home in the desert. The king size bed was very comfortable, I got some of the best sleep out there. If you're looking to get away from people and disconnect for a few days, this is your place. With a full kitchen, bathroom and living room, I didn't have to sacrifice any comfort on this trip. The mountain views from the floor to ceiling windows that span one whole side of the larger unit are epic. You've never seen the sun rise if you've never seen it happen over the Chisos Mountains from Fossil Knob Ridge! The night sky is magical. Be sure to take a good camera and tripod to capture some truly breathtaking photos and long exposures of the Milky Way unobstructed by city lights.
Fossil Knob Ridge is a little slice of heaven, so whether you're going with your significant other or with a group of your closest friends, I know you're going to have an unforgettable adventure!
Dont forget to sign the guest book!" -Chris C. facebook.com/fossilknobridge
